Stochastic pore-scale growth models of DNAPL migration in porous media

چکیده
Stochastic models that account for a wide range of pore-scale eects are discussed in the context of two-phase, immiscible displacement problems in natural porous media. We focus on migration of dense, nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) through watersaturated geological materials. DNAPL movement is governed by buoyancy, capillary, and viscous forces, as well as by the details of the porous medium. We examine key issues relevant to development of stochastic growth models. We then present a particular stochastic growth model, based on a generalization of invasion percolation and Eden growth approaches, which realistically simulates two-phase ̄ows in a computationally ecient manner. Fingering patterns are shown to depend critically on the competing buoyancy, capillary, and viscous forces between the DNAPL and the water, and their interactions with the porous medium at the local scale. We conclude with recommendations for future research. Ó 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Dnapl Source Zone Characteriza- Tion Using a Stochastic Aggregation Model
DNAPL source zone characterization is important for risk assessments, feasibility studies, and identification of appropriate remediation technologies. If sufficient DNAPL is released into the subsurface, it can penetrate the water table because of its relative density to water. When the DNAPL is also less viscous than water, an inherently unstable DNAPL-water displacement occurs. Descriptions o...

The permeability and tortuosity of pore-scale two and three-dimensional random porous media were calculated using the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Effects of geometrical parameters of medium on permeability and tortuosity were investigated as well. Two major models of random porous media were reconstructed by computerized tomography method: Randomly distributed rectangular obstacles in a uni...

A study of the eects of grid discretization on the migration of DNAPL within a discrete-fracture network embedded in a porous rock matrix is presented. It is shown that an insuciently ®ne discretization of the fracture elements can lead to an overprediction of the volume of DNAPL that continues to migrate vertically at the intersection of a vertical and horizontal fracture. Uniform discretiza...

Simulating fluid flow at micro level is an ongoing problem. Simplified macroscopic flow models like Darcy’s law is unable to estimate fluid dynamic properties of porous media. Development of pore network models for real porous media requires a detailed understanding of physical processes occurring on the microscopic scale and a complete description of porous media morphology. In this study, the microstructure of porous media has been represented by three dimensional networks of interconnected pores and throats which are designed by an object oriented approach. Af...
